The Clinical Addictions Research Laboratory (CARL) was established in 1997 under the direction of Andrea King, PhD, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago.

The overarching mission of CARL is two-fold:
To determine factors that lead to excessive use of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances
|
To develop more effective interventions in the treatment of substance use disorders, particularly tobacco dependence |
Current Research Projects
Chicago Social Drinking Project (CSDP)
Enrollment closed as of August 2024. Study now in 15-year follow-up phase with our second cohort (n=100). This project examines how adults (aged 40-65 years) with a wide variety of drinking patterns respond to common substances (like alcohol, stimulants, and sedatives).
Employing Smartphones to Track Alcohol Responses (eSTAR)
Enrollment closed as of October 2024. This study examines adults' (aged 21-29 years) responses during alcohol and non-alcohol drinking episodes in their natural environment.
