Employing Smartphones to Track Alcohol Responses (eSTAR)

eSTAR examines participants' mood, behavior, and experiences during alcohol and non-alcohol drinking episodes. Participants complete brief smartphone assessments during two drinking episodes in their natural environment (for example, at home, friends' houses, bars or restaurants, outdoors, etc).

Study participation is completed over three months.

Eligibility 

  • Age 21-29 years​
  • Consume alcohol 1-6 days per week
  • Own an iPhone or Android smartphone​​​​

Time Commitment 

  • Pre-study and orientation visits*: 1-2 hours each​
  • Two alcohol-drinking episodes with smartphone assessments: 1-2 minute surveys completed 7 times over a 3 hour period
  • Two health feedback sessions (for certain groups only): 30-minute Zoom sessions
  • 1 month and 3 month follow-up surveys: 5-10 minute online surveys​

*Virtual visits occur via Zoom (no download required) and are scheduled Monday-Friday. This study is entirely virtual and requires no in-person visits.

Compensation 

​Participants receive up to $300 upon completion of all study measures.
