We at the Clinical Addictions Research Laboratory are closely monitoring updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and have implemented new sanitizing and safety protocols in accordance with the strictest recommendations by the CDC and the Biological Sciences Division of the University.
See below to learn more about our current research projects. |
The Clinical Addictions Research Laboratory (CARL) was established in 1997 under the direction of Andrea King, PhD, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago.
The overarching mission of CARL is two-fold:
To determine factors that lead to excessive use of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances
|
To develop more effective interventions in the treatment of substance use disorders, particularly tobacco dependence |
Current Research Projects
Video Interaction Project (VIP)
Project temporarily on hold. This study examines how common tasks, such as viewing videos, impacts the mood and behaviors in adults with a wide variety of substance use patterns.
|
Chicago Social Drinking Project (CSDP)
Project temporarily on hold. This project examines how adults (aged 21-35 years) with a wide variety of drinking patterns respond to common substances (like alcohol, stimulants, and sedatives).
|
Mobile Alcohol Response Study (MARS)
This study examines responses to alcohol in the natural environment. Participants will use an app on their own smartphone to record their real-world alcohol use and related outcomes during two typical drinking experiences. |
